For young people, technology is central to everything they do. From connecting with friends, to playing with other games.
For parents and carers, understanding this can be overwhelming and it can be difficult to know the dangers and help to establish rules to keep children safe.
The ‘In the Know’ project has been designed and created especially with parents and carers in mind, to equip them with the key information that they need to help young people embark on their digital journeys safely.

Social Media and Age Guidelines
We know that many children are curious about social media, but it’s important to follow age guidelines to keep them safe online. Most social media platforms have a minimum age of 13 to create an account. This includes apps like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and Facebook.
For primary-aged children, it’s best to:
Wait until they are old enough before setting up an account.
Monitor online activity if they do have access through family-shared devices.
Encourage safe use by talking about privacy, kindness, and what to do if they see something upsetting.
Keeping children safe online is a shared responsibility. By following these age guidelines, we can help them enjoy technology responsibly while protecting their wellbeing.
Children of all ages are using technology, so just a reminder to keep consoles, laptops, devices, etc in the room with adults to monitor the games and time spent playing.
